2005.5-2018 Cummins Heavy Duty G56 Clutch Kits

If you are the owner of a truck with the G56 Transmission there are a couple things you should know before selecting a clutch kit for this truck. The transmission was built by Mercedes for Chrysler. When this unit was given to Chrysler it included a clutch assembly (solid flywheel style) and specific fluid. Dodge did not stock the specific fluid Mercedes recommended for this unit so ATF+4 (Automatic Trans Fluid) was substituted in place of the Mobil Delvac SAE 50 gear oil. When this happened the transmission developed a noise referred to as Gear Roll Over, a growling noise specifically in 4th & 5th gear under 1500rpms while under a load. This noise was corrected by Chrysler by installing a Dual Mass or 2 piece flywheel. This type of a flywheel has been proven over the years by OEM manufactures to not have longevity in a diesel application.

You may also want to consider replacing the engine Rear Main Seal while you have the transmission removed.

Some of the symptoms of your stock flywheel having issues is:

  • A rattling noise when shutting the truck off just before the rotation stops
  • Vibration while at idle in neutral
  • Spring rattle noise while on and off throttle, in gear under 10mph


NOTE: A flywheel that is separating, if ignored and not corrected in time WILL result in a broken bell housing. Beings the bell housing is part of the case, if it is broken the front part of the case will have to be replaced.
